Summary/Objective
The heavy equipment operator operates a variety of contractor equipment and properly maintains the equipment on a daily basis.
Essential Functions

- Works with and assists in digging ditches and trenches, hoisting material, tools, equipment, and any related work with a backhoe, road grater or front-end loader.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or repairs to the supervisor.
- Plows snow and salts roads according to departmental policy.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday – Friday – 48 hours: Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
Travel/ Driving
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
Driver’s license is required.
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Four years’ experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment, two of which must have been related to utility or street systems.
Title: General Laborer
Summary/Objective
The General Laborer works with their hands in a variety of construction work. Some of their tasks include digging holes, ditches, and trenches; mixing concrete. They help to build and maintain infrastructure such as roads and highways. They also set up and cleanup work sites. Construction laborers work in a variety of settings outdoors and may also experience production halts due to dangerous weather.
Essential Functions

- Perform tasks involving physical labor at many different types of construction projects.
- May operate hand and power tools of all types.
- Load and unload equipment, clear work areas, and bring materials to workers with specific skills.
- Clean and prepare constructionsites by removing debris and possible hazards.
- Load or unload building materials to be used in construction.
- Build or take apart bracing, scaffolding, and temporary structures.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
