Diesel Mechanic
Under general supervision, independently performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance of electric power generators and associated equipment at Ingenco's power production facilities. Assists Maintenance Supervisor in troubleshooting and performing mechanical duties on diesel driven electrical power generators and associated equipment. Identifies parts required to complete a job. Uses the manufactures' manuals, conducts preventive and corrective engine maintenance, and conducts engine overhauls. This is a Journeyman Mechanic level classification in the Power Plant Mechanic Advancement Program. The incumbent performs mechanical work in electric power generating equipment on an assigned basis. The incumbent has the ability to independently rebuild diesel engines by the procedures approved by Ingenco.
Examples Of Work (illustrative only):
- Observes operation of plant equipment and process for normal operation and identifies developing problems.
- Modifies operation of plant equipment and process to prevent failure to plant operations.
- Troubleshoot and analyze engine data on engines assigned.
- Perform Tune-ups and Injector replacement.
- Perform Overhauls and cylinder head replacement.
- Replace gaskets and hoses that are leaking. ( oil, fuel, water)
- Utilize manufactures manuals and good mechanic practices.
- Remove and install generators on engines.
- Responsible for recording all maintenance conducted in plant maintenance book and send in Repair orders.
- Performs good house keeping practices.
- Proper tool usage special tools and measuring instruments.
- Must have general knowledge of electricity, fuel, oil and cooling system in the plants.
- Train and assist operators in pumps, valves and motor repairs.
- Responsible for assigned company vehicle when driving.
- Including oil changes and maintenance.
- Using Hand tools.
- Drive and maintain company vehicles and Fork lifts.
- Requires lifting of up to 75 pounds.
- Working outside in adverse weather and noise environment.
- Following company policy and procedures.
- Troubleshoot and correct equipment failures, abnormal operating conditions and report abnormalities to supervision.
- Maintains plant appearance by cleaning, painting, etc. as required.
- Repairs, replaces and maintains plumbing lines and mechanical parts.
- Uses hand and power tools such as drills, hydraulic presses, and band saws.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
Must have a working knowledge of the diesel engine and an understanding of the theory and operations. Recognize the different sounds and smells of a diesel engine. Analyze temperatures and pressure. Must be physically fit and in a state of health that permits heavy lifting (75 pounds), stooping, climbing ladders, and working in adverse temperature conditions, adverse weather conditions, and high noise level environment. A valid Virginia license is required. Overtime and some overnight travel required. All requirements are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities.
Minimum Education And Experience:
Must complete at least 24 months with Ingenco as MII Mechanic. Or Graduation from high school or (GED) and have three years related mechanical work experience or the equivalent Vocational Training/Military Service/other training that provides verifiable mechanical diesel skills or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
Additional Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver's license. Overtime and some overnight travel required.
