Organizational Unit Overview
Facilities Services is a unit in the Campus Operations Division, which is a part of a broad, diverse division of Administration and Finance that includes all aspects of facilities management at East Carolina University. East Carolina University is the third largest university in the University of North Carolina system with approximately 28,000 FTS and a staff of over 6,000. The university comprises more than 7 million square feet of facilities located on approximately 1400 acres with physical assets in excess of $1.5 billion. This includes the Main, Health Sciences, and West Research Campuses, and satellite locations throughout North Carolina associated with university programs. Facilities Services has an annual budget in excess of $30 million and employs approximately 500 FTE. Major functions include facilities maintenance and housekeeping services.
Facilities Service’s primary purpose is to plan and perform corrective and preventive maintenance functions on all building structures and equipment and utility infrastructure. Corrective maintenance returns equipment to optimal design performance after failure or upon degradation from age, adverse operation conditions, etc. Preventive maintenance minimizes equipment failures and reduces corrective maintenance.
Job Duties
ECU is seeking a highly skilled and motivated person to supervise the main campus steam plant operations. This position is to manage the operation, maintenance and repair of the university’s main campus steam generation facilities, steam distribution system, building heat and domestic hot water heat exchanger coils and condensate return infrastructure. This includes the supervision of a total of ten (10) steam plant employees for (in plant) boiler operations (6 employees) and (external) steam distribution (4 employees). The 265,000 lbs./hour capacity steam generation facilities houses three (3) 75,000 lbs./hour and one (1) 40,000 lbs./hour capacity steam power boilers and all auxiliary equipment/systems necessary to provide sufficient steam to satisfy the space heating and domestic hot water needs of the main campus faculty, staff and students, including conditioning systems and for process uses on campus including steam kettles in the dining operation and sterilizers in the laboratories. The steam distribution and condensate recovery systems includes several miles of steam and condensate lines throughout campus in subterranean tunnels, rick wells as well as direct buried lines; other components include pressure reduction stations, condensate pumps, tanks and receivers and system isolation valves. The steam distribution system serves over 50 buildings totaling over 4 million square feet. There are numerous steam coils used for heat exchange including heat system coils and domestic hot water coils. This position will manage work orders for corrective tasks and preventative maintenance tasks as well as management of shop budget, inspections, training, procurement and personnel actions.
Minimum Education/Experience
High School diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in trade(s) areas assigned; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
