Organizational Unit Overview
Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.
Job Duties
This position provides audio visual, desktop, server and network support for the staff and faculty at the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI). This position will be located at the CSI in Wanchese, NC, part of the NC Outerbanks. This position serves as liaison to CSI and ECU IT resources. The individual in this position will consult with clients and evaluate hardware, software, and network connectivity needs and problems. He/she will resolve or refer to the appropriate agency hardware, software, and network connectivity issues for desktop and notebook PC systems, servers, video conferencing, lecture capture, and audio-visual technology, printers, peripherals and mobile devices. The employee will maintain hardware certification with major approved vendors as required to support client systems and will be authorized to order and replace warranty and customer replaceable parts. The employee will utilize new ITCS approved technologies and when appropriate coordinate with ITCS teams and clients to implement them effectively. He\she will participate in both short term and long range ITCS strategic planning. The employee will research, develop, and implement solutions enabling centralized management of client computing systems utilizing current and emerging technologies in software patch management, software deployment, anti-virus protection, computer policy administration, desktop remote control, and scripting. He\She will provide audiovisual support to classroom, video conferencing, lecture capture, and audio-visual technology. This includes trouble shooting problems and resolving issues for AV and video conferencing systems. Repairing defective systems when possible, processing RMAs and maintaining supplies to manage minimum downtime. The employee will provide administrative support for campus physical and virtual servers. This support will be first line support and will act as liaison to ECU ITCS systems teams and contract server support vendor. By developing productive relationships with clients and understanding and anticipating their business needs, the employee will assist clients in effectively utilizing technology. He/she will provide consulting support to faculty on enterprise technology needs, coach and train clients and provide learning materials including web pages. The employee will manage CSI campus technology projects. Duties require On-Call responsibilities with occasional support required on weekends.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration; Networking Technology, or related areas and two years of experience in the Information Technology field related to the position’s role; or a Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position’s role, or a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math or Engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position’s role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in information technology or related field; or Associates degree in information technology or related field and three years of experience in information technology; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
The employee will be expected to have considerable knowledge of business-class personal computer (PC) systems, networking, client/server systems in addition to video conferencing, lecture capture and AV technology used in a classroom environment. The employee must be broadly familiar with various software applications (Office Productivity, Web Browsers, Email clients, Video Conferencing) with high-level skills involving microcomputer operating systems (Windows 7/10, Windows Server 2008/2012, Linux, and Mac OS X) and experience with scripting languages such as Visual Basic and Windows PowerShell. The employee must be highly skilled in the following areas: problem solving, task prioritization, active listening, verbal and written communications. The successful candidate should have demonstrable experience in project management, software deployment, software patch management and systems management. Demonstrated PC experience with a strong emphasis on workstation installation and configuration and server administration are prerequisites. Work experience should include network communication configuration (TCP/IP), network troubleshooting from the PC to the network wall jack, workstation and server hardware/software troubleshooting, including OS and general application support. The candidate should have demonstrated experience providing Tier 1 support of AV control systems, audio amplifiers, mixers, projectors, touch displays and video conferencing systems in a classroom setting. Extensive experience with Microsoft applications/operating systems and Microsoft Active Directory Group Policy implementation is necessary. Microsoft Certified Professional and/or Linux RHCSA credentials are a plus.
