Job Summary:
The Control Systems Engineer provides and coordinates technical support for the Port Neal Nitrogen Complex Process Control Systems, including distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), historians and advanced process control functions. The primary function of this position is to provide direct technical support and coordinate additional support resources to the DCS, and develop the expertise of instrument/electrical group on system maintenance. This includes monitoring the control systems, on-going resolution of problems that arise, and directing improvements to the system through upgrades of the software or changes in configuration. This position requires consulting, coordinating, and skill development with site employees, and involves being a liaison with the outside equipment and service vendors.
Key Job Elements:
- Manage the DCS on a day-to-day basis, resolving all error messages or problems, utilizing additional resources if required (both on and off site). Coordinate with personnel in production and maintenance as required, to monitor and tune the DCS for peak plant performance.
- Design control system modifications to accommodate system expansions and upgrades.
- Develop control system software design, configuration and testing standards/procedures.
- Plan and perform control system administrative functions such as patches, upgrades, and hardware or software maintenance activities including those that require the involvement of other CF employees or outside support personnel.
- Conduct system “back-up” and storage of software/configuration files and develop disaster recovery plans and procedures.
- Assist in the budgeting and planning process for all changes and upgrades required by all Process Control System equipment, including negotiating technical support agreements.
- Manage and support Management of Change (MOC) process for documenting any changes or additions to the Process Control System equipment, including system configurations, loop configurations, alarm/trip settings and drawings. Coordinate all documentation changes with the engineering/drafting department.
- Facilitate Process Control System equipment knowledge base and skill training for appropriate CF personnel and to develop on site competencies within the I&E technicians, as well as enhance 24 hour coverage capabilities.
Position Requirements:
1. A minimum of 5 years of experience with DCS & PLC design, installation, and maintenance (Yokogawa or DeltaV DCS and Allen Bradley PLC is preferred).
2. Bachelor’s degree in engineering (electrical, chemical, or mechanical) preferred. An associate’s degree will be considered with 5 years of additional related work experience.
3. Experience in a chemical processing environment and Management of Change.
4. Must be able to enter plant operating sites utilizing ladders and platforms in excess of 100 feet, entering confined spaces, utilizing all required personal protective equipment.
5. Strong leadership, interpersonal and effective team skills.
6. Good general knowledge of PC software applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook and able to utilize an electronic maintenance management software.
7. Works in a safe manner that promotes EHS goals of the plant and the company.
8. Strong analytical, troubleshooting and decision making skills.
9. Capable of handling several projects and support activities simultaneously.
